Author Event at Blue Hill Library
October 5 @ 7:00 pm
The Blue Hill Public Library is sponsoring an author event with William ‘Captain Billy’ Casale for his new book, “The Best Laid Plans,” on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
“The Best Laid Plans” is Captain Billy’s second collection of humorous essays about life in Maine, following “50 Ways to be a Mainer.” This new collection is based around the real-life experiences of acquaintances, friends, and family members making plans that go awry.
This program is free and open to the public, and will be held in the library’s Howard Room.
Captain Billy has always been a storyteller. He took improv classes at the Second City and Victory Gardens theaters in Chicago. He acted in a play and discovered that, although he liked being on stage, he was, to quote Shakespeare, “a poor player.” For some odd reason, he could never remember his lines. At one time he had his own basic cable TV show and discovered he could work many hours and make absolutely no money.
Captain Billy planned to perform and tell stories the rest of his life, but the best laid plans…Unfortunately for the Captain, in 2001 he was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to endure months of chemotherapy and radiation. But Captain Billy survived. The bad news is that the aftereffects of the radiation partially paralyzed his tongue and gifted him with a speech impediment. He mourned the loss of his ability to tell stories. Until he realized he could write them. Humor has always been an important part of the Captain’s storytelling, and he hopes that you will find that his books bring a smile to your face, a chuckle to your voice, and brighten your day.
