Downeast Trout Unlimited Meeting in Ellsworth
January 15 @ 5:30 pm
Downeast Trout Unlimited will host a chapter meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Pat’s Pizza in Ellsworth. A business meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a guest speaker at 6. Meetings are free and open to the public.
Emeritus Professor Richard Jagels from the University of Maine will be the guest speaker. Jagels is a board member and museum director of Friends of Craig Brook Inc., where he is developing a Maine bicentennial exhibit: “Two Hundred Years of Sport Fishing in Maine: 1820 to 2020.” In preparation for that exhibit he has been delving into the complex history of fishing reel development, from 18th century English brass ‘winches’ to modern metal-alloy or carbon-fiber-composite fly-casting, and spinning contrivances.
Jagels also was the wood analyst at Winterthur Museum (Henry Francis Dupont’s home and the foremost museum of American furniture built between 1650 and 1850). While there he was initiated into the esoteric world of museum conservators and curators; and visited the “secret” vaults of the Smithsonian Museum. At the beginning of a 31-year tenure at the University of Maine he met Steve Brooke and they collaborated on projects for the Maine State Museum. After retiring in 2010, Jagels began writing articles for The American Fly Fisher, the journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing, including one on the Thomas Fly Rod Co. in Bangor.
A raffle will follow the speaker. Meetings are free and open to the public.
