Ellsworth Library Online Talk on Whales
July 22 @ 6:00 pm
The Ellsworth Public Library is hosting an online talk on Thursday, July 22, at 6 p.m. titled “Tails and Tales of Humpback Whales.”
Did you know that humpback whales have unique markings on their tails like our fingerprints? Learn how photos of whale tails or “flukes” taken from across the North Atlantic Ocean tell each whale’s life story. Allied Whale at the College of the Atlantic maintains the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog, which includes thousands of humpback whales tracked throughout the ocean basin thanks to collaboration with research groups and citizen scientists. Lindsey Jones will give a virtual presentation about the local whales that frequent Maine waters, how to identify individual humpback whales, and will share stories of the lives of humpback whales.
Lindsey is the director of Photo-ID Research at Allied Whale at College of the Atlantic (COA). She has a M.Phil. from COA and completed a thesis analyzing data from the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog: “Ocean-basin-wide movement patterns of North Atlantic humpback whales.”
