Online Program: “Poetry of Gratitude”
April 30 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm$35
In observance of National Poetry Month, writers at all levels of expertise are invited to “Poetry of Gratitude,” offered by the Blue Hill literary arts festival, Word, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30. The online workshop will be led by Brooklyn, N.Y.-based writer and human rights professional Emily Sernaker.
Sernaker will introduce the group to “poets who know how to slow down and appreciate life — while not ignoring difficulties of our current time.” Poets on the reading list will include Ross Gay, Ada Limón, José Olivarez, Chen Chen, Steve Scafidi and Sharon Olds.
After a close reading of the poems together, students will be given prompts to respond with poems of their own. Sernaker stressed that the class is open to writers at all levels. “It will be a place of invention, imagination and encouragement.”
Sernaker’s work has appeared The Sun Magazine, New York Times, Ms. Magazine, McSweeney’s, Los Angeles Review of Books, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Rumpus, New Ohio Review and more. In recent years, she has teamed up with Brooklyn Public Library to organize free, intergenerational, human-rights poetry programming, including Holding Space for Grief events, an Interfaith Poetry Reading and Global Citizen poetry classes.
The workshop will cost $35 per person and will be conducted via Zoom. Texts and Zoom logins will be distributed to registered students in advance. Participants must register at www.wordfestival.org.
