The opioid epidemic is killing more than one Mainer daily. Literally everyone has been touched in one way or another by this issue. I don’t believe there is any silver-bullet answer but rather a multifaceted approach, including law enforcement and more treatment options.

We need to continue advancing public policy that supports our growing economy. Over the past eight years, Maine has made remarkable progress. Mainers have seen a 25 percent reduction in the income tax; unemployment has fallen from 8.2 percent to 3.2 percent; business is booming; wages have increased; our rainy-day fund has grown from $200,000 in 2010 to more than $200 million now. We need to continue to move in that direction.

As a father of three, I want to ensure a good education and future for my kids here in Maine. We need to make sure the state adequately funds schools. As a selectman, I saw how half the municipal budget went to education. Secondly, schools need programs that prepare kids for careers after school, and our state needs a business-friendly environment so those jobs can exist here. I want my kids, and all our kids, to be able to stay here and have good-paying jobs after they graduate.
