My goal as commissioner is to increase citizen participation in local government through organized forums to assure that all voices and perspectives are heard. Currently, too many decisions are made without community knowledge and input. By working together, we bring all our available resources into play to meet community needs before they become crises. For example, restorative justice programs work to increase public safety by meshing social services with law enforcement, but funding for this important process is currently being threatened by special interests without enough input from voters.
With my extensive experience in community organizing, previously in the arts, environmental sustainability, housing security, and locally within 4-H and the Halcyon Grange, I’m poised to take responsibility for improving citizen involvement. For over 10 years, I’ve been active in the local Democratic Party, and currently serve as vice-chair. Over the last three years, while attending select board and county commissioner meetings, I’ve seen how many important decisions are made without a public voice present. I promise to work as commissioner to increase public involvement.
