Don’t let a fear of being poisoned get in the way of trying lacto-fermented food.
Those mysterious glass jars of preserved vegetables and fruits are good for you and too tasty to pass up.
“It’s the safest food you can eat,” said Elena Bourakovsky, who owns Backstage Farm in Blue Hill with her husband, Bill Raiten.
Bourakovsky sells lacto-fermented Moxie’s Russian Sauerkraut and Moxie’s Dyamite Pickles, which she makes the same way Russian peasants have for centuries. Firestarter Kimchi and Carrot Kimchi recently were added to the lineup.
Moxie’s products are sold at John Edwards Market, the Blue Hill Co-op, Peekytoe Provisions in Bar Harbor, the Belfast Co-op and the Blue Hill Farmers Market.
